A HIGHWORTH litter picking group that was on the brink of disbanding after losing its premises will be able to continue thanks to the local Co-op providing it with new storage space.
Stephen Bailey founded the Highworth Community Clean Up group in 2015 to tackle the town’s serious litter problem. But, after a few months, members were struggling to continue their monthly clean-ups as their original premises fell into disrepair. After hearing about their troubles, The Midcounties Co-operative Food store in Brewery Street, decided to step in and provide them with free storage space. The local supermarket has also presented the litter pickers with a £750 grant from the store’s carrier bag funds to purchase new cleaning equipment. The funds were raised by shoppers at The Midcounties Co-operative Food stores in the area, using money generated by the 5p charge on carrier bags. This activity is part of the Society’s ‘Regional Communities’ strategy, which sees members and colleagues come together to provide impactful and sustainable support for local community groups through volunteering and fundraising initiatives. Andy Fawlk, store manager and ambassador at The Midcounties Co-operative Food in Highworth, said: “As a co-operative, we’re committed to supporting local organisations and charities that make a difference to our community in Highworth and surrounding areas. “We’re supporting Highworth Community Clean Up because our local members voted preserving a clean and safe environment as one of their biggest concerns. “We saw a post on the group’s Facebook page about their need for a new storage area, and we thought it was the perfect opportunity to support them and help them continue their good work.” The Midcounties Co-operative has always had a strong relationship with Highworth Community Clean Up since its inception and has supported their cleaning operations in the past by providing drinks and refreshments to dedicated litter pickers who give up their time to help raise awareness of the litter problems around the town. Staff from the Co-operative will also be volunteering in the monthly litter-pickings next month to help keep Highworth clean. The group, which is additionally supported by Highworth Town Council, also aims to support youth projects in Highworth that want to improve the community for the benefit of residents.
